Our President's interpretation of the subject of this painting is somewhat at odds with it's historically verifiable context, in a humorously apt way. But this account begs the question (again): what is the place of the viewer in interpretation?
Just learned today that "Dr. Tulp" was a nickname of the Dutch surgeon Claes Peterszen. According to
The Island at the Center of the World, he administered the oath of allegiance to the VOC and the Dutch govt to the first wave of Manhattan's colonists.
My favorite. I was just talking to my mom about the Hopper exhibit at the MFA and it came up that while I like Hopper a lot I like Demuth a lot more.
