"Brooklyn is not New York; it's an island far away. And it is an island I did not love as a child. Strange things took place that were incomprehensible."

Safety in Numbers: It’s Happening in NYC

Graph and stats taken from TransAlt, who are by no means disinterested. If these numbers are real, and they seem like they might be, it's good news. Making a city bikeable takes more than a little while, but having visited European cities where they've had solid infrastructure in place for decades, the end result seems like it must be worth it.

Seal of New York

"The Great Seal of the State of New York is almost the same as the flag, but in a seal. The goddess Justice symbolizes freedom before the law. She is shown with a blindfold over her eyes, and is also holding the scales of justice in her left hand. The goddess Liberty, who symbolizes freedom, holds a pole with a liberty cap and is stepping on top of the British Crown, symbolizing freedom from Britain after the American Revolutionary War. There is a shield between them, which has a picture of the Hudson Highland, the Sun, and two sail boats sailing on the Hudson River. Over the shield is a globe, showing the Atlantic Ocean, and a bald eagle. Under the shield is a curving ribbon that reads New York's state motto — "Excelsior", which can be translated from Latin as "ever upwards.""

Shop Housing Works

Now that the new Housing Works website is up ad running, it seems only fair to also link to our online auctions/buy-it-now store, which has technically been in soft launch for like two months.

Richard Price and Junot Díaz on the Death of Times Square and Importance of Ghosts

"We always talk about New York as a 'global city,' but I think we have too much of a two-dimensional view of where it begins and ends. The same way that millions of people flooded into the city—for the first time, in a very concrete and dynamic way, New York has sent colonies to other places."

Profiles and sections of the city (a worm’s-eye view?) | New York Public Library

Sitting in my feed reader for a while now. A small selection of maps from the NYPL collection showing geologic overviews and sections of the city.

Coney Island Sideshow Has Guantánamo Theme

Wow. I might have to go see this to get a real take on it, because after reading this short review, I'm very conflicted about it.

Activists Protest U.S. AIDS Policy In Puerto Rico

Remembered about this again today. Housing Works staged a protest last November that shut down Broadway to traffic. Conditions in Puerto Rico are not optimal. But, I did those t-shirts.

Ride the City

Nice Google map hack incorporating bike lanes into the route planning.

Brand new HW Thrift Shops blog, showcasing items for sale in our stores.

City Council passes congestion pricing

Roll call on today's City Council vote to approve congestion pricing in the city of New York. My councilman, Bill deBlasio, who is running for borough president, voted "No", which seems to be a politically questionable move. He's probably lost my vote.

New York Public Library Blog

"Megablog" is an apt description. Being added to my RSS reader with all due speed. Seems on casual browsing to be like a more demure BB.

Weegee Collection

I don't know that much about Weegee, but I obviously know of him, and the first few pages of this archive have some fantastic photography.
