Basically no way too do this without setting of the smoke alarm, at least in my apartment.

Interestingly (?) they don't actually say when World Pinhole Camera Day is, but no doubt I missed it. Hope to have one of these up and running in time for next year.

Wired explains the CHDK project, which adds open source software on top of the normal Canon Digic firmware. Most practical is the addition of a battery-life meter, but long and short exposures are some of the many other features. via carrie.
