Sympathetic Magic

Fraser's description for two related magical principles: that two things that were like each other could influence each other, and two things that have been in contact could influence each other.

A Life Round Table on Modern Art

Haven't read through it yet but I cannot, cannot, cannot handle the subject matter raised to the power of the advertisements.

New York Public Library Blog

"Megablog" is an apt description. Being added to my RSS reader with all due speed. Seems on casual browsing to be like a more demure BB.

Rare Books on Calligraphy and Penmanship

Jaw dropping.

Fear of Flying

"My heart is still beating"

Singing Science

Hilarious archive of science-based songs, including the original of TMBG's "Why does the sun shine?"

Obsolete Skills

Exhaustive, and exhausting. I should go through these and try to figure out how many of them I have.

A Reformed Stolen-Art Dealer Tells All

Interestingly refutes the notion that it's impossible to sell stolen art. But maybe more interesting is the idea that the rewards offered by burgled museums amount to something very like traditional supply and demand.

Device available at bar

Device available at bar

I wish I could say this was a bar graph of some kind, or inside New York's (the World's!) ketchup armory. But it's neither.

Eclipse

Eclipse

I spent about 10 minutes running around on the roof trying to get a good shot of the eclipse last night, and I figured I could do a real long exposure with the camera propped against something, but those didn't really come out. There's a little wiggle artifact here, but this was my best shot of the night.

Myth Monolith (Liberation Movement)

Myth Monolith (Liberation Movement)

Robinson's piece was one of several that really effected me when I went to go see Unmonumental, but was the only one I could get a reference shot of, due to the New Museum's asinine, not well-publicized, and seemingly directly contrary "no photography" policy. Rant ends.

Tom Petty’s Los Angeles

Hell yes.

My Five Favorite Mountain Goats Characters

"I feel hope for them, because they love each other. I know that that is a corny thing to say, so for people who have corn allergies I apologize."

The Pyrotechnic Imagination

The Smell of Space

"Each time, when I repressed the airlock, opened the hatch and welcomed two tired workers inside, a peculiar odor tickled my olfactory senses. At first I couldn't quite place it."
