Out of season
October 20th, 2007
There were a surprising number of roses still more or less in bloom this late in October, including the Johann Strauss, the Barbra Streisand, the Acid Reflux and the Past Time (one of these strains was made up). But this wall of rose was sadly not, though no doubt the smell would have knocked me for a loop.
Champagne Room
October 20th, 2007
It still amuses me to no end that when bees are doing the thing that they do with flowers they are essentially the vehicle for two or more (many more) flowers to have sex with each other. As if that weren't enough, just before I took this photo there was another bee involved. But it was more discreet.

Trips to the moon
October 20th, 2007
Mentioned in the liner notes of the Criterion "For All Mankind," which does this year's "In the Shadow of the Moon" one better by being soundtracked/scored by Brian Eno. This is the earliest known account of a (speculative) trip to the moon

Desire Paths
October 12th, 2007
Desire Paths would be a great name for a band. Or for anything, really. My association with these is that college was overflowing with them.
Son of a Gun
October 11th, 2007
Can't think of anything to say about this song, other than it's more or less perfect.
Face Maker
October 11th, 2007
This one time I participated in a linguistic study that had me determine whether a sentence made grammatical and logical sense. After the hundredth or so determination, I started to feel like I was hallucinating. That's sort of what this site is like.
Movie Title Screens
October 11th, 2007
An exhaustive, or at least exhausting resource of movie titles. via cp.
Det. John Munch
October 10th, 2007
Yes. Just what I wanted and for this very reason. Tracking John Munch appearances. I don't even like the character very much! But he's *everywhere.* And that means a little bit that Elmo and Lt. Giardello live in the same universe.
Bortle’s Dark Sky Scale
October 9th, 2007
An ascending (descending?) measure of typical levels of visibility of heavenly bodies at night.
List of artificial objects on extra-terrestrial surfaces
October 9th, 2007
The list of artificial objects on the surface of the moon article has been sitting in my RSS reader for months. This is one level up.
Christian Heresy
October 8th, 2007
I've been reading Baudolino over the weekend and it reminded me that whenever one reads Eco set in the medieval period, it's probably wise to have a list of heresies to refer back to every once in a while.
