Alone with the Danes

Alone with the Danes

I'm in the midst of unpacking and repacking and repainting and etc, so this is just a taste of the upcoming massive photo onslaught from my trip to Scandanavia. Spotted in a shop window in Copenhagen.

History of Summer

makes me want to buff up and travel back in time. like many other things.

Francesca Berrini

Once you get far enough away from the maps - or are looking at them as thumbnails, you can't even really tell how they were made.

Full Revelations of a Professional Rat-Catcher

"Ike Matthews is also willing to go out rabbit-shooting with gentlemen during the season, and will supply and work ferrets at reasonable charges. He is also prepared to break dogs and puppies to ferreting and Ratting on reasonable terms." via bb.

Going To… Series

Apropos of last night's Black Hole of Calcutta-esque show. Amazed that no one passed out. "Let's go to Maine out on the East Coast / Let's go to Maine right now / Let's beat the retreat / Let's hop on the plane / Let's get out of here / Let's go to Maine"

Herbert Bayer’s Emergency Marks

Mo' Problems = Mo' Money. Apart from an auction running on eBay right now, this seems to be the only image of any size of this set of currency.

Laos

This came up on the ol' shuffling iPod today. I'm not sure what about this song is so good - probably the barely-there piano beneath the give 'em hell voice. A mixtape and erstwhile radio show staple.

100 oldest dot com domains

Its amazing that it took 2 and a half years to only run through the first 100. I mean, who the hell cared back then, but still. Were these prohibitively expensive back then, or just next to useless?

A Brief History of the Apocalypse

At first I was all like "No way everyone stopped predicting the Apocalypse once 1700 rolled around," and then I was all like, "Oh, pagination." thanks, kio.

The Mechanical Man of the Future

"What can the mechanical man do? Plenty! He can walk, and he can talk. He can stand, sit, bow, and otherwise comport himself after the fashion of a human being. But he can do more than that. He...can perform any number of duties advantageous to mankind."

4 Little Joeys

O-K. I can't tell if this is Jpop or Portland-style electro. I think it's Jpop? Who the hell knows. Just saw this video on the aforementioned Specialten. Superb. More.

SPECIALTEN.TV

Great interface. Also every video I've skipped through to so far has been great. Not sure if there's a way to see a list of videos without registering, but it might be worth it. C. and R. Eames's Powers of Ten currently in the top ten. As it should be.

Brocade

Greg Davis is a definite favorite of mine - Burlington, VT reprahzent! This song is mostly (looped?) guitar and some subtle programing thrown on top and drums beneath. Absolutely stunning. Off of Curling Pond Woods, which is easily one of my favorites.

Freud: The Uncanny

"It is only rarely that a psycho-analyst feels impelled to investigate the subject of aesthetics, even when aesthetics is understood to mean not merely the theory of beauty but the theory of the qualities of feeling." thx, kio!

’08 Republicans Differ on Defining Party’s Future

The photo accompanying this article is like a bar graph of how uncomfortable I am with any of these men winning the presidency. Plotted in the background is how much of an old white man each candidate is as well. Which makes for some interesting math.

skycatcher

I imagine there's a very real chance that I will obsessively reload this page every 5 minutes for the rest of my life.

one.img one.mp3

Nicely executed. Adding a large image (seem mostly to be film stills?) makes the idea of the mp3blog much more interesting to me.

BABIES TEAM UP WITH SUMO WRESTLERS FOR CRYING GAME

Further evidence that CNN is no longer capable of or interested in reporting on actual news of any importance. I'm not convinced it's a bad thing. Maybe the funniest part of this link is the url.

Downtown Train

"Will I see you tonight, on a downtown train? All of my dreams just fall like rain, all upon a downtown train."
